Perry Community Problem Solving Team - State Champions

The Michigan Future Problem Solving Program would like to officially recognize the Perry Community Problem Solving (CmPS) Team as statewide winners.  As the state champion for Community Problem Solving they get to travel and compete at the International Future Problem Solving Competition in Iowa during June. This is a very prestigious honor.

Congratulations Team Problem Solvers!

Perry’s CmPS team is comprised of students from 5th -11th grades attending Perry Schools. Coached by retired Perry teacher Jan McMullen, the students include:  Miranda Lewis (11th), Taylor Fuhrman (11th), Jacob Spiess (8th), Olivia Lewis (6th), Dylan Spenny (6th), Parker Lewis (5th).

The CmPS Team has been working together on their P.L.A.R.N. Project since the spring of 2013.   The team identified a problem that was affecting their community – plastic debris.  They developed a plan to combat plastic debris and have held dozens of events, education programs, fundraisers and more to put their plan into action.

The students worked together to develop a way to recycle normal plastic shopping bags into reusable totes that they have been giving away and selling as a fundraiser to the community. They cut up, and combine “plarn – plastic yarn” threads made from grocery bags, to crochet heavy duty reusable totes.  All of the students, their coach and other community members have pitched in to help.

“I am extremely proud of this Community Problem Solving Team,” says Michigan FPS Director Tracy Page, “as a Perry graduate, I love to see this caliber of work from our students being recognized at an international level.”

The Perry Community Problem Solving Team’s P.L.A.R.N. Project is a shining example of the creativity, ingenuity and hardwork that creates not only state champions, but international champions. Community members are invited to see the students display and ask questions about their project at the Michigan Future Problem Solving State Bowl Competition, Sunday March 30 at noon in Wells Hall, Michigan State University.
